“A Year on the Farm” is an educational game developed as part of a final year project to address the lack of quality teaching materials for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In light of the global movement towards hands-on learning, this board game offers an alternative and immersive learning method. The project aims to address the lack of quality evaluated material for ESD and contribute to the promotion of an alternative learning approach based on experience and reflection.
The game focuses on the topics of food and agriculture, as these are closely linked to several Sustainable Development Goals. Players take on the role of farm owners who have to manage their farm over the course of a year while focusing on one goal: Animals & Biodiversity, Climate, Water or Money.
The learning objectives of the game include a deeper understanding of seasonal nutrition, animal ethics, water consumption in agriculture and the multi-dimensional nature of sustainability. The game is designed to help players develop their decision-making skills and critical thinking.
